PCOS Blog Post: Weight Loss & Emotions

May 30, 2010

I got a message from a young woman the other day asking for my secret to being so strong willed towards losing weight and living a healthy lifestyle. She stated how quickly her positive, upbeat attitude and outlook can quickly change into a mild depression when the number on the scale is higher than it was last week.

This is my response...

I think we all can relate to that. First and foremost, I know it isn't easy, it is probably the most difficult aspect of my life that I face on a daily basis. It does get easier as you get healthier and loose weight.I have to focus on the positive, healthy choices I make now that I didn't make eight years ago. I find confidence and comfort in that.

Facing the number on the scale is something I do every morning. I never use to weigh myself every morning, but do so to confirm I'm doing things right. I try not to beat myself up over being a pound or two over one day, weight fluctuates. I focus on everything I do for myself that is positive. I make sure to exercise at least 5 days a week. I eat healthy lots of vegetables and fruit. I handle my stress, which I use to internalize. I'm very proud of myself at how much I have grown and changed, so I chose to concentrate on that.

Focus on the positive, on your accomplishments not on the negative or what you haven't achieved, yet. Be happy and proud of where you are today. Realize that you are giving it your all, putting your best foot forward to being healthy. Take the time to appreciate where you are today.

It's really important to enjoy today for what it is and where you are at. Stressing too much about tomorrow or the number on the scale can be toxic. Don't beat yourself up over a bad day. Just regroup tomorrow!
