PCOS Blog Post: Becoming a Vegetarian Is It For Me?

May 9, 2010

In the past month, I've consider more times than not becoming a vegetarian. Watching Food, Inc and reading up on exactly where our food comes from makes me reconsider my previous belief that meat in our diets is absolutely necessary.

I've always been under the assumption that being a vegetarian wasn't as healthy as a diet that contained meat because of the lack of protein. I have done no research, again only making assumptions. I've had many questions and continue to think of more.

How does one decide to adopt a vegetarian diet? Why? What does that include? More importantly what is excluded? What are the advantages? What are the disadvantages?

It leaves me wondering. Can a grilled veggie burger be as delicious as a hamburger? I eat veggie burgers. I like them on top of my salad. I just don't know if it can replace the occasional, grilled to perfection burger with a ripe tomato and crunchy lettuce on a summer afternoon.

In order to consider if this is really a change I could consider making; I have to evaluate. I mean really scrutinize the numerous types of vegetarian diets, is this a permanent lifestyle change I could make. Is it one I want to make. I don't know. Then I have to evaluate my life. Occasionally, I really crave a good steak. More often than not in the morning I like pork sausage with my egg (organic of course).

Since, I don't acknowledge becoming a vegetarian as a life or death situation I really have to ask myself: is it worth it? Could I live without meat? Should I live without meat? I realize I've only been considering this from one view; everything I would be missing. Without regard for all the advantages and benefits of such a diet.

On a personal note, I never understood those people that are somewhat annoying when they proclaim to the world, “Oh, no I'm a vegetarian I can't eat that.” In all honesty, I find it slightly annoying. Have they had it right this entire time? Is going meat-less actually better for your health?

But am I bound to join those saying, “Oh, NO I'm a vegetarian.” I have not decided, yet. I also must admit I've never perfected cooking tofu. I've consider a trial run for a month. Is that enough time? I need to do my research with a lot of self contemplation!
