PCOS Blog Post: Too Much Sugar
April 30, 2010 I recently read an article about the alarmingly amount of sugar Americans consume in a year. What's your guess? How many pounds of sugar does the average American eat in one year? Before you make a guess, consider all the different foods that contain sugar. The average American eats about ONE HUNDRED and FORTY pounds of sugar each year. According to Women's Health Magazine that's the equivalent amount of sugar found in 3,628 Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Naturally, you think sugar is really only found in cake and ice cream. However, to eat that much sugar in one year you have to eat foods the contain hidden or extra sugar. The article lists the twelve worst foods; I chose just a couple to highlight and share with you. Del Monte Peach Chunks, the ones packed in heavy syrup have 23 grams of sugar per serving. In peaches, really? Well, it's really the syrup the peaches are in that amounts too this much sugar. Besides the unnecessary sugar along with other additives and preservatives added to these peaches, it's best for many just to stay away from these so-called peaches. If you want to have a little fruit that's always around, pick-up some frozen fruit. No added sugar; just fruit! Like that occasional bowl of morning granola. In one cup of Quaker Natural Granola Oat & Honey & Raisins you'll eat 30 grams of sugar, which accounts for one-third of the calories. Not the healthiest or most filling breakfast. Replace it with less sugar and more protein, a bowl of cooked oatmeal or an egg with toast for breakfast. Some of us will buy a smoothie thinking it's a good alternative. In the Jamba Juice Banana Berry (22 fl oz) you will drink 82 grams of sugar. Not all, but many smoothies lack substance no banana or whey protein. Instead it's just fruit juice with added sugar. Too much sugar is in the typical American diet a contributing factor to it being unhealthy. Especially for a woman with PCOS, your body can't properly digest and use sugar for energy. As many of us already know sugar is stored as fat. Make sure you're not eating to much sugar. Consider these helpful tips: - Read the nutrition labels make sure to consider the serving size.
- Make more food at home, a smoothie you make with whole fruit, ice, flax seed, a little yogurt will have far less sugar than many you can buy.
- Eat more whole foods! Our bodies are able to properly digest these foods.
