PCOS Blog: Food, Inc.
April 23, 2010 My first impressions about the film Food, Inc. leave me speechless. I can not believe how so much of the food consumed in the United States is produced in a factory type setting like our automobiles, our electronics, and all the countless other products that we use in this country. This film is very well done, it brings up important questions that everyone should consider when making food choices. It's slightly depressing while simultaneously empowering. Going to the supermarket the major companies still want you to believe that the milk, chicken, or beef you're feeding your family comes from a wholesome farm. It's really picturesque marketing; you imagine the cows grazing in the fields all day. Unfortunately that's the assumption the major companies want you to make. So, you think you're buying and eating healthy, farm grown food. However, in reality they stand in a pen ankle deep in manure until they are jammed in a truck and sent to the slaughterhouse. On a daily basis they are fed corn packed with antibiotics and growth hormones instead of grass. This is so they become fatter, quicker while hopefully preventing infection and sickness in the herd. The film showed cows that could barely walk, because of such rapid weight gain their bones were not able to properly support their bodies. It is a jaw dropping, appalling film. One that everyone should watch. So, my curiosity about nutrition continues as well as my belief that the food we are eating today is making us more unhealthy. It's my goal to continue to inspire and motivate others to make healthy food choices that will help to prevent disease and fight illnesses. Hopefully you'll watch Food, Inc. Afterward, you'll probably ask what can we do? I've added a few books to my reading list to get some great ideas and will be sharing those with you as well. A couple ideas to get you started: - plant some tomato plants, maybe a few rows of lettuce, or an entire garden
- shop at the local farmer's market
- eat more vegetables and less meat
