What Are Ovarian Cysts?

According to the Mayo Clinic ovarian cysts are common among women of childbearing years. It is a fluid filled sac either within the ovary or on the surface. It is normally about the size of a single pea, but some can be larger; which can be detected by a pelvic exam; a physician should be able to tell if you have any. He /She may also want to do an ultrasound to confirm or evaluate the number and size of the ovarian cyst(s).Many cysts will occur without symptoms. Unfortunately, in women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome it can cause discomfort or affect her ability to conceive.

A woman with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can have all the symptoms of PCOS, but not have any cysts on her ovaries. You can also have cysts on your ovaries without the symptoms of PCOS. Certain women are fortunate enough to only have an occasional cyst on her ovary without the complications and symptoms that come along with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

Like any system in your body it can be affected by your hormones. A hormonal imbalance could very well cause cysts to form on your ovaries. Again, a healthy body is all about being in balance!

If you don't have a hormonal imbalance the likelihood of having cysts that cause your PCOS symptoms is very unlikely. So, by eating a healthy, balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and proper stress management you can increase your ability to maintain a healthy weight and hormone levels; therefore, diminishing the likelihood of developing any cysts.
