Metformin and PCOS
Metformin and PCOS; Metformin/(Glucophage) aids in controlling blood glucose levels, it is typically prescribed for diabetes. However, women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can often be insulin resistance. Those that have difficulty with insulin resistance, their bodies have difficulty using carbohydrates for energy/fuel, instead carbohydrates are stored as fat.
Metformin works by decreasing the adsorption of carbohydrates and the production of glucose by the liver along with increasing the sensitivity to insulin; which has helped women with PCOS to lose weight and get pregnant. It’s really important while taking it to adopt a healthy diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates. While taking Metformin, it’s important to limit the amount of sugar you consume. Too much sugar, you’ll start to notice some of the side effects of this drug.
Like most prescription drugs, it is simply just treating your symptoms. Taking Metformin doesn't allow the body to heal itself; more than likely if you stop taking it your body will still have an inability to effectively digest carbohydrates. This will be especially noticeable if you don’t embrace a healthy, PCOS-friendly lifestyle.
